The CernVM File System was developed to assist high-energy physics collaborations to deploy software on the worldwide-distributed computing infrastructure used to run data processing applications. It provides a scalable, reliable and low-maintenance software distribution service. Files and directories are hosted on standard web servers (read-only file system) and mounted in the universal namespace/cvmfs. Due to the low performances of NFS (Network File System) over WAN (Wide Area Network), a large pharmaceutical company started using CERNVM-FS to distribute applications and libraries between scientists in its laboratories worldwide. This improved the access speed by up to 30 times.
